UNP members were assaulted by govt members in the presence of the President

Karu Jayasuriya MP

by Karu Jayasuriya

Press Release by Karu Jayasuriya, Deputy Leader, United National Party, on the assault of the main opposition, United National Party, by the Members of Parliament of the Government 22nd November 2011

We have to reiterate the fact that there is a severe eroding of democracy in this country.

The latest example is the assault of the members of the United National Party by the members of the government, when the opposition, including UNP, the main party of the opposition, peacefully demonstrated at the time of the submission of budget proposals in the Parliament.

Members of the UNP were assaulted by the members of the government, in the presence of the President, Mahinda Rajapakse, leader of the United Peoples Freedom Alliance and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.

This is the Democratic Republic of Sri Lanka, not a country which has a system of government of the nature of Idi Amin, Bocassa, or Col. Gaddaffi.

We need a strong opposition. Leaders of the government say that the opposition should oppose the government forcefully, wherever it is needed. if the reaction of the members of the government is assaulting the members of the opposition by throwing books at them and hitting them whenever they demonstrate, we have our doubts regarding the honesty and sincerity of the statement of the government when they say that they need an opposition which express views opposing the government, if they continue to assault those who express opposing views.

We do not have a monarch in this country. If the government expects a system where the opposition and the people say-

Majesty the sun rises because of you
Majesty flowers bloom because of you
Birds sing because of you
Majesty we breathe because of you

We do not hesitate to take action against such a system. We cannot allow the government which suppressed the 17th amendment and obtained 2/3 majority in parliament under the cover of the 18th amendment, to destroy the opposition and the public opinion against the government, using the political force

Hey Karu, there is a serious erosion of democracy in the UNP and you have been able to do zero about it, so how can you expect anything better from the Hambantota mafia? Lanka is Rajapakse’s militarized banana republic due to its politicians in the ruling party and opposition.
You really are rather pathetic and should move over and take Sjith Premadasa along. You are so ineffectual against the Ranil dictatorship in the UNP, so we have no hope in you as a future leader for the opposition in parliament. Meanwhile sajith premadasa the other crown prince is a whining idiot who can only mobilize Buddhist monks (rather than a multi or inter religious group) for his petty causes i.e. to become party leader, rather than for a grand national cause like mobilizing against the militarization of Lanka and the Rajapakse dictatorship.
Please, let the UNP find a new young and energetic alternative to Ranil who is even more pathetic that you and Sajith QUICKLY. Oh! Sri Lanka seems cursed due to its politicians, their greed for power and whining ways!

It is delusional to even refer to the country as a democratic republic, where elections are rigged, freedom of expression is severely restricted, and any form of opposition is met with blunt force. And now even the opposition is manhandled in parliament.
As far as I am concerned in Sri Lanka the erosion of democracy began in 1972, and each successive government has taken away chunks of it, and today under this regime its more a dictatorship.

Yet, it is not too late for all right thinking people to come together and fight this state of affairs.

We have a number of gangsters and criminals in Govt ranks. Moreover the President does not hesitate to pardon and release convicted criminals who are loyal to him. AG is is sitting in the palm of the President. Several politicians have crossed over to Govt ranks to escape criminal proceedings being launched against them. So we have a mafia operating not a Govt.

When the President of a Nation speaks…there has to be respect for that Person…
in his / her capacity as the President of said Nation…

President Mahinda Rajapakse…was elected twice by a huge popular vote….
He is the duly elected President of Sri Lanka….

What would happen…if such crude demonstrations were held….
    within an National Assembly….
during an important National Speech by ….
    USA – President Obama…
    UK – Queen Elizabeth…
    Japan – Emperor of Japan…
    Thailand – King of Thailand…
    Presidents / Leaders / Kings of – Russia – China – France – Singapore – Saudi Arabia – etc – etc..??

a utterly desperate UNP deliberately organised this to humiliate the President of Sri Lanka….
    NOTE – that the so-called “leaders” of UNP — RW & Karu…
do not have the guts to hold a placard…just simply grinning….
then the entire group walked out….
to hold a meeting on the lawn outside….
proving that it was a deliberate & organised provocation….

Obviously done to humiliate Sri Lanka….
and give ammunition to the IC – NGO’s – INGO’s – HRW – AI -ICG – etc to villify Sri Lanka…
now that the LLRC report is to be made public….

The so-called “Colombo elites” may cheer…
but the average Sri Lankan…undestand that this was an deliberate action to …
    “back stab” Sri Lanka…..
remember what the UNP did / say during the final stages of Eelaam War…

Of all the ridiculous happenings under this regime in recent times, the most hilarious one must be that where the eldest sibling – No.4 in the pecking order – sits and watches the “gori” from his exalted chair. He saw who did
what from the Govt side and now has the gaul to say “we will appoint an inquiry to see what actually happened” Ha! Ha! Even Kudu Mervin will do a better job
in trying to fool the country.

What inquiry, good Sir, you were witness yourself that day. No wonder the outside
world gives tuppence to your Commissions of Inquiry and your Panels of Investigation.

Mr Karu Jayasuriya says ” We can not allow the Govt to destroy the Opposition”

This Deputy Leader wasn’t good enough to sit in the Opposition Leader’s chair even for a couple of weeks , going by the recent action of the Part leader of the Party Mr Wickremasinghe ,

Dr Jayawardana , the motivationl speaker and the political coach of the British Diaspora , engineered this whole saga by smuggling anti Govt and anti Budget placards in to the chamber.

Which precedent in the Westminister system did Dr Jayawardan follow for his actions?.

This is all part and parcel of the diversion tactics of the pathetic UNP ruling faction, led by Mr Wickremasinghe, which has become so impotent that no one takes them seriously except of course the Colombo Elite.

This was a tactical move by the Ranil faction to deflect the Charge Sheet served on them by the Rebel or rather the Dissident Group.

The allegations of the charge sheet are so serious that any party leader of any Wesminister System based country ,would have resigned immedeately.

But the part Leader of the oldest and supposed to be the most democratic party in Srilanka couldn’t give a tuppence for his fellow MPs, who are crying for justice and fairness.

And the supposed to be wise Elders like Mr Jayasuriya are scared to even confront the Leader despite the near total annihilation of its support base.with the exception of the Colombo Elite.

So why would the Govt waste its energy when you are doing such an excellent job yourselves?..

For whatever it is worth the Opposition should together and pass a Motion of No Confidence in the ineffective and clueless Speaker – whose job was to call in the
Sgt-at-Arms before matters got out of control. The incident was planned to avoid
a normal process of debate on the Budget. Because it is a thoroughly anti-people budget (price hikes in fuel, gas, fags and booze) weeks before the budget.
And then a 3% devaluation when the Central Bank chief assured the country and investors we have the most buoyant economy and Stock-market in Asia. A prolonged debate on all these would have hastened the regime’s imminent exit. Therefore
Kudu Mervin’s services were sought (isn’t that what he is kept against the unanimous country-wide revulsion against this manimal) Eerial killer Lohan Ratwatta found the action irresistable to get into the act.

It is an affront to Parliament and the people for the Speaker, who was right there watching the whole disgrace, to now say an Inquiry should be held to determine what exactly happened. Jeepers Creepers! Does the nation realise our
power-drunk politicians take our people for goats? Clearly, you cannot win the Motion with the juggernaut majority but at least it goes into record. I am afraid the way things are going and considering the background of our Honourable MPs, it will not be long before we see one or two MPs knifed to death within the precincts of the House. That is the culture of many MPs in Parliament today where one of whom from Galle even smiles and says “I was declared not insane through another medical test”
