How Northern War Theatre is turning into a Sri Lankan Quagmire

March 29th, 2008

Doing the same in North, just as in the East is going to work-is the mistaken belief that is hovering major diplomatic, economic and militaristic burdens for the Government of Sri Lanka today, says Irasiah Ilanthirayan, the Military Spokesman of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

Fighting a war for political reasons and unable to pull out due to the fanfare shown at the start of the warfare is turning the Northern war front into a quagmire for Sri Lankan forces according to Irasiah Ilanthirayan.

The LTTE Military spokesman talked to the Australian Tamil Broadcasting Corporation on the prevailing conditions at the Vanni theatre of war.

[Irasiah Ilanthirayan]

Excerpts from his comments as follows:

“The war towards North that began on 15th of March 2007 in Vanni continues through this day. There is a vigorous war going on in several parts of Mannar and Manalaru.

The major thrust that was started in a similar manner on the 11th of October in 2006 in Killali, Mukamalai and Nagar Kovil areas have not advanced an inch. Attempts to advance from these areas are being made continuously. Under the guidance of our leader V.Pirapaharan, our Colonels and cadres are waging a vigorous fight utilizing the landscape and tactically appropriate ways to inflict casualties.

Mannar

There are several reasons for Sri Lanka armed forces to keep targeting the areas around Mannar. In accordance with their agenda, bringing the greater Mannar area under their total control and opening a land route along Mannar-Poonaryn is important for them.

There is a striving to gain politically as well by trying to push towards the holy shrine of Madhu in the meantime.

If a specifically named military operation is conducted consisting of a mission and goal, it will also have to spell out the time limitations to accomplish them. In order to avoid being entangled in such circumstances, vigorous attacks and tactics utilizing large number of forces are increasingly being carried out in those areas.

Through these attacks they may attempt, to capture places that they could mention; or to gain politically, by bringing the holy area of Madhu under control.

They have not announced a time frame under these circumstances, but the push towards capturing the greater Mannar areas and securing a land route along them is on.

The armed forces are using maximum strength in these operations. 57th and 58th divisions along with several sub forces, guard troops, special forces, and artillery units are being put into action with great anticipation. But the war is grinding on over years.

What is the result of this ’serial’ operation? What are the loses to the armed forces during this war that has spanned over an year? And many analysts have begun to look into what the implications will be from these.

Mannar is our soil. We will fight for it intensely. Operation is underway to open a land route to Jaffna and also political purposes. But Sri Lankan forces are in deep angst on the prospects of capturing these areas as time goes by.

In these areas, in accordance with the prevailing conditions we employ several tactics by going forward and backward; such as attacking sideways after allowing to advance and attacking by intervening the moving forces.

The forces may arrive at Madhu tomorrow. The following day we will be in Mathawachchi. This is a rotating aspect. What losses will the forces encounter on every inch they advance.? Our cadres carryout their maneuvers in this war, by grasping the befalling realities when the Sri Lankan forces feel for their losses in the battlefield.

The Sri Lankan military base in Anuradhapura is being used as the command center for these continuous operations.

As I said earlier there are several reasons for these operations. Even though there is no clear vision, there are compelling political reasons. There are no accomplished victories to speak of and politics is preventing to curtail the operation that began with much fanfare. This is what the Mannar battlefield is today. They have fallen into a quagmire.

When Mahinda Rajapakse came to power, war was a sub text. But now it has taken full embodiment of his administration. His early dazzle was that over powering the Tigers will be easy. But Rajapakse has repeated the same historical mistakes made by previous Presidents and Armed Forces Generals.

With the set time frames within only them and not in the limelight, operations are being carried out by playing a mere numbers game. The same errors were made previously in the math of the war.

Propagandas trumpet that hundreds of Tigers are dying while just a few government soldiers are getting wounded. They are unable to avoid this. Propaganda is a tool to deflate and distract the feelings on inflation, distrust over the Rajapakse brothers and resulting confusions and mistrust of the government in the South when the truth of the war zones creeps amidst the iron clad on the media.

Manalaru

As in Mannar, the Armed Forces are attempting to advance in Manalaru as well. But we have very strong defense structures there. And like Mannar, Manalaru is also our heartland. Our forces are engaged in two types of warfare there.

It is a suitable terrain for conventional as well as guerilla warfare. The Sri Lankan forces are stuck there too without moving forward.

Mukamalai

As far as the Northern battlefront is concerned, skirmishes in Mukamalai, Kilali and Nagarkovil are of continuous daily occurrences. They are unable to inch forward while facing casualties here too.

Amidst this, they have built up the troop strength in the peninsula. This is due to their fear that the Tigers may land there and launch attack anytime. This is why their most trusted 53rd division elite forces are stationed there. Some support guard troops are also accompanying them.

The Air Force base is nearby. With this facility they could transport the wounded and attend to other logistics faster. But they are unable to do much with all these capabilities.

Success and failure in a battlefield is determined by meeting set goals. Since 2006, we have been succeeding on the warfare of attacking, upon cutting short the advancement of troops in the Northern front.

East

The situation of the Sri Lankan armed forces is like ‘Thinking of unhusked rice and pounding the mortar’. Even the international watchers of this conflict are now saying this. Those who invested believing in the tactics of the Sri Lankan Army are now questioning the results. Part of this development is what has led to President Rajapakse and Military Generals to now say that time limits cannot be imposed on winning the Tigers, as previously thought of.

As far as the East is concerned our need is to wage a fight with intense. Within that limit we are managing to fight a war. This situation has forced the government to station troops there.

When armed forces have to be deployed elsewhere as new fronts open far from the East, government is facing the necessity of replacing them.

Doing the same in North, just as in the East is going to work-is the mistaken belief that is hovering major diplomatic, economic and militaristic burdens for the Government of Sri Lanka today. And the battle front is turning towards our favour at this critical juncture.

The Sri Lankan Armed forces have come to know of the intensity of our attacks over numerous times. For example, our attacks on the Anuradhapura and Katunayake Air Force bases are of one kind. Then there is ‘Unceasing Waves’. And there is another kind, in which our fight back against ‘Agni Kela’ stands proof of the parity of our forces on the balance of militaristic strength.

When such reality prevails, international analysts are vociferously pointing out to the Sri Lankan government the larger reality, that the Tigers have not lost their capability to carry out such attacks. Have you done anything to change the attack capabilities of the Tigers is what these analysts are asking the government.

[BBC News footage on the recent sinking of Sri Lanka boat off Mullaithivu seas]

Mullaithivu Black Tiger Attack

I cannot say anything in detail on the attack on the seas of Mullaithivu a few days ago. The fallout from this attack is huge for the government. We have brought this sea lane under our control, which is also the distribution route to the Sri Lankan armed forces in the North.

The Black Tigers have again challenged the notion of maritime sovereignty of the government of Sri Lanka. The questionable status of Sri Lankan maritime waters sovereignty is lingering in the international arena today.

The Sri Lankan government has vast militaristic resources and we cannot match those. But our determination is greater than that of the Sri Lankan forces. They go through a lull in the war as they don’t have justness to wage this war.

The armed forces are now aimless. They distrust the task at hand. They are depressed and in deep angst. In these circumstances their determination is dented; their will is getting destroyed.

It fully expected that every tom dick and harry will now be coming out of the wood work with such BS stories to give some oxygen to the tigers and their supporters claiming the impending doom, should be a good indication to the military and the public that the screws are indeed tightening on the blood thirsty terrorists.

Us Sri Lankans know the level of hyperbole in these ‘journalistic articles’ are inversely proportionally to the truth.

The WAR Drag is on. There’s nothing to celebrate for SL Forces since Thoppigala Capture.
500 troopers suffering virus fever doesn’t bode well either.
Did LTTE plant anthracites or biological weapons to get SL Forces get sick????
All the big mouths of war victors such as Gothaya Rajapakshe have all gone quiet. As well as facing US Courts via Bruce Fienn for war crimes in SL while being US Citizens also must have driven Rajapakshe Inc under ground.
They all are BLOODY FOOLS TO abrogate CFA and put all their eggs in one basket called the WAR.

There is a definite goal and timeline.

Goal: A Billion dollars (to Rajapakse Family)
Timeline: End of 2008 (or 2009 or 2010)

Until then the War will continue.

  • 7. Raj  |  March 30th, 2008 at 9:08 am

The GOSL has always taken the carrot and the stick approach, every time the tigers had the chance to grasp the olive branch or carrot they blew it ( sometimes literally) now they are getting the stick with interest, lets hope the end is nigh for these terrorists for the sake of all sri lankans.

The guy who wrote this mis mashed half baked analysis is expecting them to roll over and be killed willingly shows his lack of knowledge and understanding of the situation and undermines any credibility he has on the matter.

The tigers have no option except fight tooth and nail otherwise its saynoara Velu, then what would our Canadians friends do with those credit card scams and war taxes.

Yes Bala, they have the ultimate fear of being wiped out in their mind. They seem to be soooo kind and concerned about the welfare of Sri lankan troops! They don’t want to to see them getting hurt!! They don’t want to see them getting demoralized!!! - Unbelievebale kindness from terror group that vowed a total bllodbath…

The war is over. I hope the Sri Lakan people in the south should be told the truth. So far about 1900 troops have been killed and about 7500 are wounded. Tigers also lost some but no so much, they are fighting an advance and then hit from behind tactics. This is ta typical tactics followed when you are numerically the underdog. Tigers are fighting a war of attrition, it is quite normal. I will give you an example the Canadian Federal goverment sued me for something I did not do. We waged a war of wait and fight. We wore them down pshchologically and finally they wanted to settle out of court, we said no, when they came to the trial they looked like a paper tiger, the judge threw the case out. They did not have a case.
Why am i saying this, We Tamils are like that and we are facing genocide, we will use every tactics that will protect us to the maximum and hit the enemy where he is weak. As Count Alfred Schlieffen said, ” Necessity compels us to think of a way in which to conquer with mumerically weaker force, If one is too weak to attack the whole, one should attack a section”.
Actually tigers are not attacking, the opponent is falling into their traps. The best warfare in the world.

No structured bureaucratic military can stand up to Guerilla warfare. Vietnam, Iraq, Sri Lanka. Besides
    what is this war about?

Remember tigers have not used any of their secret weapons yet. you may see fields and fields of dead bodies. It will be a shock to the world.

According to this article, SL military has failed miserably. But, this does not explain why LTTE cannot dislodge the SL military deployed in Mannar, Manalaru, and far north. LTTE has not overrun at least a single SL military post in the last 8 months for sure. If they are saying that they are on defensive, and this is their defensive strategy, they are not in good shape. Because best defense is the offence. On the other hand, SL military does not advance without eliminating the true resistance. Therefore, things like Madu-Madhawacchi drama that Irasiah is dreaming would not happen. It is the Jaffna front that would end the war. It is relatively a small area, from SL military FDL to EP. It is good that SL military is planning rather than advancing to EP in haste. This will be a 10-mile walk, if SL military plan and beat the tigers at the neck.

Sinhalese must understand that Eelam was never under the Sinhala racist regime until British Government handed over power to them.

GOSL continues to commit war crimes. No one can conitinue to commit crimes against humanity and escape from prosecution. The intl community may point their finger at GOSL for war crimes and this will bring an end to crimes against humanity.

Tamil Tigers are great to fight a racist Apartheid Sinhala occupation forces. Sinhala regime with the support of few Tamil puppets cannot win this war against the WILL of the Tamil people in Eelam and all over the world.

  • 15. 2ndClassTamil  |  March 30th, 2008 at 2:49 pm

This appears to be an excerpt of an excerpt!

One interesting question asked was: Why has the LTTE been quiet about informing their losses to media in recent times? Answer: It is news to me that there is such a perception; because battlefield losses are clearly notified in the ensuing days in our Voice of Tigers radiobroadcasts with full statistics and details. I don’t see any discrepancies here.
Here in the UK one can listen to (IBC Tamil) radio channels that announce these ‘brave deaths’ giving names and addresses of combatants; sometimes a few, and a few times around 10. I was wondering how credible this information is based on the experience of diaspora Tamils who have connections in Vanni.

  • 16. Oru Manithan  |  March 30th, 2008 at 3:07 pm

When they Sinhala military to brass cowardly named this Vanni operation as war of attrition and when they say their intention is only killing 10 to 20 Tigers a day is an excuse and it only shows their inability to move in the Tiger land. Also failed to realize that this war of attrition is only leading to war of malnutrition of the masses. But whenever a small area is captured the military establishment try to portray as huge land capture victory and claim that a strategic place falls in their hand inorder to boost the morale of the beleaguered soldiers and the COL suffering southern mass. This includes the number of Tigers killed is massively exaggerated and down played their losses. We ever hear a secret dumping ground in Mannar where the fallen troops are secretly dumped.

The Sinhala Government can not show the real battle ground reality, This is why they are against any reporter who try to show the real side of the war casualty is being targeted by Military as unpatriotic act and have a tight control of battle ground news. Where as LTTE announces it’s death every day in pulikalinkural.com .

Also the deadline set by Fonseka is being reviewed many times in the past, Now they say it might take till end of 2009. The first one was June 2008. This shows their under estimation of LTTE and Military’s inability of gathering intelligence.

Nevertheless the Sinhala army has huge advantage in Manpower and stock of modern weapon especially the modern air force, but is this enough to win the LTTE? To answer this, if we look back the history of the past 25 years war, it is a clear NO. But LTTE also has many advantages which i do not want to mention here.

Battle field victory is only a part, there are many more factors involved in defeating the invading Sinhala army. This is a modern art of War, There is no better commander in the world than V. Pirabhaharan who leads the LTTE forces.

This statement by Ilanthirayan is very significant.
“When they move in to Madu, we will be there in Medavachi”.

  • 18. Rajash  |  March 30th, 2008 at 6:24 pm

Apparently ther Heads of Armed Forces have requested the President to extend the time frame untill 2009 to defeat LTTE

This extension of tine frame is going on for the last quaret of a century

  • 19. Political Observer  |  March 30th, 2008 at 10:47 pm

If the LTTE are so sure of themselves, then why bother making this statement at all? The LTTE position should be: let the SLA advance to only be defeated.

Why make noises in India and worry that New Delhi favours the Sri Lankan government’s tougher stand?

All evidence, from scores of dead reported by the ICRC to the lost Eastern province to the slow advance of the SLA in the Mannar sector, to the lack of any significant gain for the LTTE in the past year… suggest that the LTTE is trouble.

Rather than continue with the notion of a separate state, it would be far more responsible if the LTTE joins the political process and seeks a solution within a united Sri Lanka. But, we all know that won’t happen, as India has a warrant for Prabakaran & Co.

  • 20. Murugan  |  March 30th, 2008 at 11:05 pm

Yes it is True that the Tigers have been able to hold off the Sri Lankan Forces on all three fronts thus far. I guess Vavuniya is a fourth front as well? But I don’t read much about it. Anyways, the basic logic is that if the security forces keep pushing then eventually the Tigers will give way.
And imagine if for example the Sri Lankan Army was able to push through the FDL at Muhamalai-Nagarkovil. Didn’t they recently push past the first Tiger line of defence and destroy 25 Tiger bunkers? Imagine if the Sri Lankan brigades can overrun all the Tiger defences in Muhamalai. Then Elephant pass will soon fall to the army. And then the whole strategic setting of the war will change.

So it is true that the Tigers have held off the Sri Lankan Army for this long. But if the Army keeps trying to advance eventually one of these FDLs will fall. At least that is my comman man logic. And once one of the FDLs fall then it will be like bursting through a floodgate and the Army will capture a significant amount of territory.
If Muhamalai falls the army will get Elephant Pass.
If Mannar falls the army will make significant progress up the Mannar-Pooneryn road.
If Weli Oya /Manal Aru front falls then the army will get close to Mullaitivu and Puthrikippidu and will be able to station its artillery close enough to where the army can shell the Tiger’s heartland.

I doubt that the Tigers will be able to hold up their defense lines forever. And it seems that Rajapaksa is going to sustain the offensive at any cost. His political future hinges upon the success of the army.
So is the army in a quagmire? I don’t think so. This time around there is no major push like Jayasikuru. This time around the army is fighting a war of attrition. And the army is steadily bleeding the Tigers. Everybody knew the north was a whole different ball game than the East. Unlike the East, the Tigers have no place to withdraw to. The Tigers are like a cornered animal with no where to go. They have no exit. That is why they are fighting hard to protect their Defense lines. This is totally different from their tactical withdrawal from the East. The army is just steadily weakening the Tigers through attrition.
And eventually the army will break through one of the fronts.

But remember the army’s slow progress against the Tigers comes at the cost of 24% inflation (year over year) on the Sri Lankan Rupee. So if it begins to seem that the Tigers can not be defeated within a reasonable time period, then eventually the economical / inflationary cost of sustaining the offensive will destroy the will of Sinhalese to seek a military solution to the conflict.

This guy wants us to beleive the military is in all kinds of trouble ????
How then does he explain the constant (almost) daily begging by the tigers and their head postmaster Nadesan.

In the last few months Nadesan, Velu and his cronies have issued a number of statements begging all in sundry (India, UN, IC, TN etc) for assistance to stop the army onlought, yet this flunky writer wants us to beleive they are in some position of power get real man, they are now begging for their lives almost daily.

In a few months time Nadesan will be begging directly to the GOSL for a repreive, perhaps he can take one way flight on Eelam airways !

Rajash, so 3 Months of major operations is a Quagmire is it? Don’t you worry your pretty little head about our soldiers, most have over 10 years battle experience, Sri Lankan forces are the Second most Battle Hardened Troops in the World - second only to Israel! One year or two will not make a difference to these guys….but give it 6 months like they said then come tell me its a quagmire.

It becomes more and more clearly that the Sinhala forces can never ever defeat the Liberation Tigers. Everyone - except most probably they themselves - know it. A Sinhala Army which is supported by states like the USA, GB, Pakistan, Japan and China is unable to defeat a movement which is supported by no one but his own people. I’m sure that we will liberate our motherland under leader Prabhakaran and no one can obstruct this way to Tamil Eelam. Least of all a scad of Sinhala forces.

  • 27. Sinhalese  |  March 31st, 2008 at 11:11 am

Commenst here from both sides are laughable and sad. Western Tamils complimenting each other LTTE success of keeping army at Bay. On what Cost? Poor girls and boys from Jaffna and vanni still dying. May be not that many as GOSL propaganda wanted us to beleive. Nonetheless they are dying and that fact cannot be ignored. What you have won? Apart from greener pastures and creditcarsd from West and may be mortgaged house - Few millioners in Canada perhaps - at what cost - Suffering from Fellow Tamils - And Sri Lanka Army soldiers- How many families without dads- very recently a soldier died without even seeing his new born baby daughter? It is sad. GOSL would not loose. 30 years they waged war and negotiations. While some parts of Souh being developed Government leaders are OK. What About Prabhakaran and his Family. they are safe too.
Only poor people from both sides are dying. Those in West dreaming LTTE win - should wake up from their deep slumber. You are not winning-
neither GOSL. There is no clear winner here. GOSL is certainly not lost either.

It’s sad to see still many war mongers amoung Sri Lankans specially expatriates. I wonder those war mongers ever wanted to send their children to the war front? What we are bargaining here is the lives of poorest segment amoung SL population with no voice.

What LTTE has done is wiped out entire generation of Tamils and made them ‘overseas’ forever. Poorest of them became cannon fodder for their thirst for power. The successive GOSL ’s made SL as one of the failed states. So both sides has done their part to make this war transferd to next generation.
Comments #2, #12 and #16 are some of the examples where Sri Lankans(probable Expatriates) lost their respect for life to whom suffer from this protracted war. For them war in Sri Lanka like a Cricket Match which runs commented as ‘lifes’ on both sides.
I feel really shame to idetify me as Sri Lankan when we keep war mongering and keep this menace going on.

    Nathen,

Israel’s situation is far different to Sri Lanka. Making the comparison is a fool’s errand. Israel attacked Lebanon to Destroy Hezbollah, they thought they could do it in 30 days, they failed and miscalculated.

The GoSL will do the same as the East. they will gut out the LTTE infrastructure then empower the Local people to root out the remaining LTTE activists themselves.

I feel terribly sorry for our sinhala sahotharayas, debacle of “jayasukuru”hasn’t taught them a lesson.Mighty Israel with such a fomidable army are unable to stop rockets being fired from the tiny Gaza,by the time these people realise the folly of their futile military adventure it will be too late. How can we tamils ever live in harmony with these people?Since independence their so called leaders thrived on communal politics,we tamils were like a soccer ball, the party that hit us most got the cheer and the votes.Suriya you are wrong in your analysis we’re not war mongers, where we are concerned LITTE are our saviours, they made us realise the folly of talking politics with these barbarians, today what’s happening to our beloved” Madu Matha “is evidence of their indiscriminate, insensitive brutality,on the other hand taking her deep into Vanni only shows the secular nature of our freedom fighters.MR’s red shawl reminds me the symbol of AIDS ofcourse without doubt he is the symbol of AIDS that has befallen todays’ Srilanka.
