Bankers Who Bankroll An Endangered Species (aka Tamil Tigers) in Sri Lanka

by Muttukrishna Sarvananthan

On the very same day of the announcement by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) about a Stimulus Package for Finance and Leasing Companies of Sri Lanka in order to weather “some stresses…observed in a few Registered Finance Companies (RFCs) and Specialized Leasing Companies (SLCs)” as a result of the global and domestic financial crunch, not to be outdone, few members of the Tamil Diaspora in North America “suggested donation” of “US$50.00 or more” (per person) in order to prevent the extinction of an endangered species (aka Tamil Tigers) in their imagined homeland of Tamil Eelam at a “MEGA Rally” organized by the “Tamils Against Genocide” (TAG) in Washington, DC, U.S.A on Friday, February 20, 2009. Although the pretence for the solicitation of the aforementioned donation was to cover the expenses for “blown-up photographs of refugees, placards, banners, rally mega-phones, water bottles”, as usual the intent was bankrolling the dwindling species of their tribe back home.

Although majority of the Paper Tigers among the Tamil Diaspora communities crossed the border from Canada to participate in the anti-genocide rally against the Sri Lankan State (because the organizers could not mobilize critical mass of people in previous attempts at such antics in front of the Indian Embassy in Washington, DC on January 23, 2009 and against the Independence Day celebrations of the Sri Lankan Embassy on February 07, 2009 at the University of District of Columbia), handful of the prominent organizers of and participants in the rally were Bankers who hold top positions in the largest multilateral bank on earth and two of the largest private commercial banks in the Untied States (one of which is, in fact, bankrupt but rescued by the Government) and Boffins from remote Universities in the United States. Besides, we also learn from couple of enlightened members of the Tamil Diaspora communities that, many of the participants and indeed organizers of the aforementioned protest demonstrations in the US were Tamils of South Indian origin.

In the same way the Chairpersons and CEOs of RFCs and SLCs met with the President of Sri Lanka on January 29, 2009 to seek State assistance to weather the financial crunch, we learn that few Tamil Bankers and Boffins met with certain sympathetic members of the House of Representatives (the Congress) and the Senate on February 20, 2009, seeking their assistance to save the endangered species in Sri Lanka, and probably to obtain a tiny share of the US$ 800 billion stimulus package announced by President Obama and approved by both the Congress and the Senate for re-arming and re-grouping of the endangered species in Sri Lanka to continue the Lions versus Tigers duel. Moreover, “Tamils for Obama” campaign is alive and kicking even after the incumbent President of the United States assumed office on January 20, 2009, but said to be under scrutiny on suspicion of soliciting funds to save the endangered species in Sri Lanka, which is outlawed in the US.

Both the Chairpersons and CEOs of RFCs and SLCs and the Tamil Bankers and Boffins attempting to save the endangered species in Sri Lanka have one thing in common; i.e. in spite of their espousal of downsizing (or right sizing) the Sri Lankan State or evicting the Sri Lankan State from their envisioned Tamil Eelam State respectively, they run to the State (host State in the case of the latter) with begging bowls at times of distress or desperation. It appears that these hypocrites do not practice what they preach, and hence expect the State to become the rescuer or lender of last resort. Thus, Marx has triumphed over Markets!

Ironically, few unrepentant Tamil Bankers and Boffins in the US and around the globe continue to bank on the reincarnation of the endangered species in Sri Lanka, viz. the Tamil Tigers. They stubbornly refuse to learn lessons from the global financial crisis and continue to offer lending hands to an un-creditworthy client in the pretext of “Stop Sri Lanka’s Genocide of Tamils”. Ironically, the claim of genocide of Tamils by impervious and insular members of the Tamil diaspora (epitome of whom is M.I.A) was conspicuously absent when the Sri Lankan security forces wrested control of the Eastern Province between July 2006 and July 2007, and subsequently Mannar, Vavuniya and Kilinochchi districts in the Northern Province. Only when the security forces began military operations to wrest control of the Mullaitivu district (last bastion of the LTTE) did the impervious and insular members of the Tamil diaspora discover genocide, which exemplifies the duplicity of such claim. Thus, though the pretence of anti-genocide rallies by the Tamil diasporas in capital cities of western countries in early-2009 is the protection of Tamil civilians caught up in the fighting, the real intent is to save the engendered species and its leader from annihilation.

Hello Sir,

I attended the rally...for you to claim that everyone attended the rally with saving Tigers is preponderous.

What have you done so far to save the innocent Tamils trapped in war zones?

Posted by: aratai | March 8, 2009 05:04 PM

Sir, when did you last visit your home country? Your are living in a free country where you have no worries. You do not know what this ruthless government is doing in our Eelam in order to sub due the tigers. Every day hundreds of innocent Tamil civilians are being killed by the government. What do you call these killings? To help the civilians from Tigers rule or a pure genocide. The present government is deliberately killing the Tamil so that one day they will have only Sinhala, Buddhist in the country. We Tamils are suffering so much because people like you, a real curse for the community. We dont have unity even at this eleventh hour.

I do not want to quible with the views expressed. There is a lot of evidence that even anti-tigers participated in rallies due to concern over the brutal way that civilian deaths have been treated by the government and the army. For me what is puzzling is that this person with a PhD (was it home economics) is offering no analysis but pro-goverment rhetoric while claiming to be head of a think tank. Where is the thinking in the tank would be my question?

What a shame a person with such an impressive qualifications and holding respectable position has stooped to the level of calling names of fellow Tamils who are doing well , just because he is with the Mahinda regime and against the cause they are supporting. We will wait and see what this scholar will achieve on his own for the Tamil community after the annihilation of the endangered speciecs he attack in paper.

I am sure he will be knighted by Mahinda at the recommendation Gothabaya and Sarath Fonseka.

The big G word(genocide) has been uttered by Jayalalithaa only recently.

Anyone can see thru her comment when there is an election round the corner. You are right on the money to point out whatever happened to genocide when the east came under SL govt control.

May be the people there are not considered as worthy of living. Genocide claim is so shameful,it is a pity some of these people think they can fool the west with these absurd assertions! Finally this is not to agree with the jingoistic SL govt. There has to be a "third way" out of this mess for tamil people.

All possible roads available to Sri Lanka lead it to bankruptcy,IMF is the right start. your crocodile tears will not balance the blood shed by Tamils last 61 years.

Adolf Hitler's self claim ideology of Aryan chauvinism was reinvented by Anagarika Dharmapala a well known Sinhala Buddhist chauvinist in Sri Lanka later 20th century. The effects of Nazi social policy in Germany was divided between those considered to be "Aryan" and those considered "non-Aryan", Jewish, or part of other minority groups. By promoting Sinhala chauvinism, Buddhist monks methodically plot the genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka who are non-Aryans for last 61 years.

Sinhala chauvinism was promoted by Buddhist monks at grass root level in villages and suburban. The politicians were compelled to rely on Sinhala Buddhist chauvinism to gain power in successive elections. Today, the evolution of this chauvinism gains nine parliament seats for monks which grant them to decide balance of power in determine the ruling party of the country.

On the other hand, successive politicians were compelled to suppress Tamil community to attain power. Even though, Buddhism preaches tolerance and pacifism, Monks promote ethnocentrism and militarism in Sri Lanka last 61 years to systematically genocide Tamils. They were succeeding in creating a taboo of elected president of the country must be a Buddhist.

S.W.R.D Bandaranaike a well known Sinhala chauvinist and former prime minister of Sri Lanka is very first individual In 1927 made representations before the Donoughmore Commission for a kind of political confederation with separate government for Tamils in the North and East. However, in 1940 the Sinhala Maha Sabha and its members solely Buddhist monks led an island-wide mass campaign to make Sri Lanka a Sinhala Buddhist country. Its main demand was to make Sinhala, the official language and Buddhism, the state religion. In 1956 the same S.W.R.D Bandaranaike supports the "Sinhala only" policy. This volte-face however, ensured him a landslide victory at the 1956 general election.

To date, Sinhala Buddhist chauvinism claims approximately 200 000 thousands innocent Tamil's life, about a million externally displaced and close to similar number is internally displaced, minority Tamils are being targeted and tortured, discriminated and massacred just for being a Tamil by Sri Lanka forces.

It is interesting, that these Buddhist monks criticize Canadian parliamentarians for raising their voice against Genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka. They even want to educate Canadians how to terrorize minorities. This Sinhala Buddhist chauvinist have already succeed Adolf Hitler by carrying out the 21st centuries Holocaust of Tamils in Vanni, Sri Lanka right under the nose of international community. This year to date 1200 innocents were killed in Sri Lanka government arranged Safety Zone, 2500 were injured severely. According to UN human rights council's Dec 2008 report in last two years 6000 Tamil civilians were disappeared or extrajudicial killed by government forces. Sri Lanka is the first country use cluster bombs to kill its so claimed own civilians.

Though, today UN and rest of the world may deliberately overlook these crimes against Tamils. However, the day of justice will come. Then, perpetrators and facilitator of these crimes must pay the price for the genocide of innocents just for being born as Tamils.

Seems like you're quite upset that you had to dish out your precious $50.00 bill.

I was not there, so I don't know why they were demanding the $50.00. One thing is sure not to protect the LTTE.

What are you up to?

was it cold during the demonstration in Washington, D.C.? or that you forgot to wear your hat?

Full bright Scholar?

As usual, all those who migrated through LTTE Human Smuggeling Operations and claimed Refugee Status are upset when truth is said by one of their own people.

While all Tamils are not LTTE Terrorists, all LTTE Terrorists are Tamils.

The writer’s drivel deserves only contempt and ridicule.

Unable to stand on the merits of their arguments, some people seek to garner some attention by advertising their credentials. No matter how factually inaccurate they are, no matter however unimpressive their credentials are, they insist on making fools of themselves in public.

The idea of prosecuting GR and SF as war criminals is not something that started only after the LTTE was cornered in the Vanni. It was conceived even as the war was being conducted in the East. Granted some of the organizers with Tamils Against Genocide are strongly pro-LTTE, but the effort by Bruce Fein is a broad-based effort to resist the regime’s atrocities. It hardly helps the LTTE. Moreover, the character of the current war in the Mullaithivu is very different from what happened in the East.

What this writer shows is that, if the pro-LTTE people are unable to think outside the box, and sometimes vicious, the anti-LTTE people can be even more vicious, inventing their own facts to suit their arguments. In their eagerness to see the LTTE crushed, they support a vile, fascist regime or choose to soft-pedal and whitewash the regime’s horrific record.

Let me take the incendiary charge that the $50 donation was "as usual the intent was bankrolling the dwindling species of their tribe back home." That $50 was sought only from a small number of volunteers, and only a small number of people paid it. If any money is left over after the expenses, it may be used to help with continuing rallies or pay a part of the large legal fees for Fein. I have known most of the people who volunteered for the rally, including those who collected the donation, and can assure everyone that the vast majority had nothing to do with the LTTE and are doing this only in the interest of helping the innocent Tamil people facing devastation in the Vanni. Even Anandasangaree has called for slowing down the war to help the civilians there and the innocent LTTE cadres, regardless of what happens to the LTTE leadership. It is the time for unified efforts to save the civilians.

What is more, given the way the SLA has surrounded the LTTE in the Vanni, it is sheer idiocy to suggest that anyone can help them there with a small amount of money collected in America. Little wonder that some “economists,” having realized late in life that they are in a field that is fundamentally irrelevant in that their basic assumptions about human rationality are wrong, have lost their senses..

It is vile of the writer to take on that poor girl MIA for talking about genocide and bringing attention to the issue. The term ‘genocide’ has been used in Tamil nationalist discourse for a long time. SJV’s son S.C.Chandrahasan in the eighties called his group in Madras as the “Organization for the Protection of Tamils of Eelam from Genocide,” or ProTEG. SCC is hardly pro-LTTE. Has this writer taken on Chnadrahasan too ?

Though in terms of numbers of people killed what has been happening in SL may not be technically genocide, the intent, the planning, the callous disregard of lives are all there. Torture, rape, massive displacement in the name of HSZ, colonization, aerial bombardment of civilian settlements, etc are all designed to systematically reduce Tamil people to a subject people by reducing their numbers and power. So, it can be legitimately called ‘slow genocide,’ but one doesn’t expect such an understanding from third rate ‘scholars.’

Your claims that the rally was backed by bankers and Boffins is ridiculous. I spoke at the rally and was involved in the organization. sorry no bankers, no boffins ( what is that?) and no terrorists, just 8,000 humanitarians who believe in justice, integrity, truth, freedom, and saftey for the Tamil people. I guess you never heard of those words. Neither did Hitler or Rajapksa. You are in good company

is he living in Jaffna even now? I do not think so? must be in the cool climes of Toronto. Even his claim of LTTE are true, why has he not though about his own undergoing a mini-holocaust and the rest in mini concentration camps. Wanni and Vavuniya ( IDP camps) are under Nazi rule........we all know the end........and what has happened to the race that has undergone the zenith of persecution in the history of the world?

Hi Muttu,

Its sounds like you have taken you whole time to help the srilankan state terrorist government to hide its genocide against the innocent Tamils civilians.
Point Pedro has given several academics to the Tamil Eelam and no traitors until yesterday.

If you are a personal who really care about the Tamil Eelam why did you left Tamil Eelam after you got your free education up to university level using the Tamil Eelam people Tax money?

In past or future you haven’t been a helpful hand to Tamils. But unlike other Tamil academics who were educating the world, about the genocide agenda by the Sinhala Buddhist chauvinist government, you take your time to encourage the Srilankan state terrorist to kill all the tamils in Tamil Eelam.

But day will come... That day you and the world will realise you are not Obama.

And …. Not all the Nationals live in abroad get the chance to govern like in Afghanistan.

I myself attended the Feb 20 rally in front of the Whitehouse, along with another seven to eight thousand Tamils. There were a genuine concern for the Tamils trapped in Vanni, and I know personally many of them participated were not sympathetic to Tiger tactics.

Will you please list all the countries from whom Sri Lanka is begging to get financial and arms help to finish the tamils. Also please list all the countries who have banned tamilians from helping the tamil eelam course.

My concern is that the community, especially the international Tamil Diaspora, has not only been hijacked by the LTTE for the last 25 years but also hoodwinked by them. Hijacked by claiming to be the "sole representatives" and eliminating all opposition. They lived by the gun and paid the price for it, sadly dragging the entire community in the mud. They hoodwinked the community into accepting grievances against government which are no longer valid. No doubt there has been discrimination against Tamils for several decades by government. Tigers took advantage of this to generate billions of dollars from the diaspora for a futile war that has devastated the country, especially north and east and came close to destroying the Tamil community. Present problems are economic and social, need for development, education and employment, which needs to be addressed by the community after peace has been restored. Tamil Diaspora has invested hundreds of millions of dollars, possibly billions of $ on financing a futile war, which if utilized for investment in business and industry in the north and east, would have created unimaginable prosperity for people of our community. Also, language disputes fifty years ago are no longer valid. Youth of the country need English education, which has to be sponsored by the private sector. This is happening in the south. We can achieve much more in the north and east, if only the LTTE can lay down arms and allow the community to get back to normal life. There is a need for the community to stop depending on government to take care of them. In countries like Malaysia and Singapore the minorities have prospered despite discrimination by the state sector, because they did not depend on government for their future.
What the Tamils need is emancipation, i.e., freedom from war and conflict, freedom from hunger and poverty and freedom to pursue their living including education. So called self determination can only achieve benefits for a handful of Tamil politicians or power hungry war lords.
I am in favor of constitutional reform and also a federal state, subject to cooperation and negotiation with the south. This cannot be realized in the present mindset of polarization or animosity between north and south, resulting from the war. Also it is not a priority at this stage.

one thing TO understand and that is LTTE may be defeated but Tamil aspirations cannot be defeated. Tamils will fight until such time.

The author seems to be the one and only staff of the self proclaimed "Point Pedro Institute of Development". Only visible development he may have contributed so far may be for the develpment of the "Genocide of the Tamils" It is obvious he is supporting Mahinda's genocidal policy!!

Answer ; You should READ the news daily to keep up your Current knowledge before you write. Sorry, I can't stop laugh at this statement when I read.

Since when they are offering Fulbright scholarship based on some one's political affiliation?

Question: Where were you before 25 Y and what happened to the development projects ( if at all anything)

What if the Government had divert the money ( of course 40% of the Budget is for War) for the Development not just in the South but all over the country.

The country is now bankrupt and Central bank is signing a 1.9B loan from IMF with all the conditions that has put forward. The electricity board will soon privatized and what JVP is going to do ?

Over 30000 Sinhala Youths and 20000 Tamil Youths could have have saved if the Sinhalas have thought of this in the 50s, 60s 70s or in the 21st Century. Sorry don’t blame all the ills on the victims.

The Endangered Species

Fresh from his tirade against Maya Arulpragasam ( Maya) in the online Sunday Leader edition of March 1st, Dr Muthukrishna Sharvananda ( Dr S), has strode into transCurrents on March 8 with his mighty pen. Despite his illustrious qualifications, Dr S has strayed all over, like spraying bullets from a machine gun. In the process, Dr S has spent many bullets ( paragraphs) in identifying the target—the “ endangered species” ( ES), taken the readers on a roller coaster ride and wasted their time by bringing in irrelevant subjects such as the financial crunch. Dr S would do well to go back to school to learn the art of writing—to formulate a thesis sentence and then build on the subject.

The long winded thesis that the Tamil Diaspora are begging for funds to bolster the LTTE is not worth discussing.

Dr S’s allegation that Genocide was discovered by the Tamil Diaspora only when Mullaitivu was attacked is false. Tamils Against Genocide ( TAG) was well established before the Mullaitivu attack. Even if Genocide was raised later, it does not mean that it did not occur. There is no rule that such issues should go hand in hand with the occurrences. Surely the work done by Bruce Fein, former U.S. Deputy Associate Attorney, representing Tamils Against Genocide, and the filing of a 12 count Genocide against two very senior Sri Lankan government officials must have taken enormous time. The indictment report is said to chronicle 3,750 extra judicial killings (of Tamils), approximately 30,000 Tamils suffering serious bodily injury, and more than 1.3 million displacements since December 2005.

Attorney Fein has expressed willingness to debate the issue of Genocide by the Sri Lankan government. Would warrior Dr S volunteer to argue with Fein in the US.?

In the Sunday Leader article, Dr S pitched into a verbose and vituperative attack on Maya and condescended to give her the benefit of the doubt regarding her claim that she was born in Sri Lanka. In what capacity did he arrogate himself to say this? He then went on to say “ I can forgive MIA ( Maya) for her understanding of the meaning of the word Genocide because she is not educated enough to understand such terms”. Again, what arrogance!
In that article ( of March1 ), Dr S denies Genocide but in transCurrents, he takes the stand that it was not raised in a timely manner. Then presumably he does not deny the occurrence.

It is clear that modesty is not one of Dr S’s virtues. In the Sunday leader article, he elevates himself as a “learned person”. He should realize that obtaining high educational qualifications is not synonymous with “learning”. Dr S must be aware of the famous saying, “ A little learning is a dangerous thing”.

Mr Sarvananthan,
You are entitle for your opinion, but not your facts. Tamil diaspora is united mostly by human suffering in Vanni and other parts of North and East, however I will concede to you that there are people take care of welfare of LTTE only. I saw People of all kind in the rally. Pro Tigers, anti Tigers, human rights activist, tamil nationalist, supporters of united Srilanka, people who are interested in well-being of all srilankan and people never interested in any politics at all. You can skew the truth anyway you want to serve your own good whatever it may be, but facts remain complex and different than your analysis.
Among diaspora, there are strong LTTE supporters and strong anti LTTE people, but most of the people are "pro LTTE" by default, thanks to violent Sri lankan anti Tamil policy since 1948. All the groups that I mentioned want peace, where they differ is the means to achieve it and the expectation of the outcome.
If Sri lanka wants peace, no point in talking to her friend JVP but with enemy she created- LTTE. It is a futile exercise to portray all Tamils are terrorist and terrorizing and killing them. It is counterproductive, only forge hatred leading to next generation of violence.
A lot of people have blood on their hands ( Sihalese/Tamils/India/International community) since 1948, in my opinion, SL government has blood on their mouth as well.
I pray, all interested parties including International actors soon realize their mistakes and bring the suffering of people to an end not by slaughtering them but respecting political and human rights of minorities.

Your friend
