by Rajan Philips

This election was supposed to be a one horse race for Mahinda Rajapakse. Now it is a contest. Nobody can yet say that Mahinda Rajapakse is going to lose; nor can anyone now say that Sarath Fonseka is not going to win. [TC]

Sri Lanka Tamils' plight compared to Nazi Germany in London Protest

More than 20,000 pro-Tamil protesters swelled the streets of London around Parliament today, Jun 20th as campaigners compared the Tamils' plight in Sri Lanka to Nazi Germany.

BBC Report on the protest rally said:

An estimated 20,000 people have marched in London in support of the minority Tamil population in Sri Lanka.

In May government forces wiped out the Tamil Tiger leadership, ending a 26-year war between the army and rebels.

More than 250,000 people are displaced from their homes in northern Sri Lanka, according to the UN.

The demonstration follows a 73-day protest for peace in the country that ended on Wednesday and featured mass sit-ins blocking central London roads.

Many of those at Saturday's demonstration waved black flags representing the civilians killed in the last phase of the conflict.

They carried placards accusing the Sri Lankan government of genocide and asking for thousands of displaced people held in camps to be released.

Some of the campaigners compared the plight of displaced Tamils in Sri Lanka to Nazi Germany.

Supporters built a mock-up concentration camp and marchers chanted: "Shame on Gordon Brown."

Suren Surendiran, of the British Tamils Forum, said: "The comparison with Nazi Germany will shock - but it should do.

"There are hundreds of relatives here who do not know what has happened to their next-of-kin. Genocide is happening before our eyes in Sri Lanka and the international community has taken little or no action to help.

"We have held talks with Gordon Brown but now we are calling for action."

Several main routes through the centre of London were closed to allow the march to take place.

The Tamil Tiger rebels started fighting in the 1970s for a separate state for Tamils in Sri Lanka's north and east.

They argued Tamils had been discriminated against by successive majority Sinhalese governments.

The UN says thousands of civilians were killed in the war earlier this year.

This is brilliant! The acting out of the violence, the mock-up of the IDP camps, the people carrying pictures of missing relatives--all this will help the British society feel and see the seriousness of the situation in SL. This is how to combat the oppressive silence around a war with no witnesses. Even UN aides aren't allowered cameras and phones when visiting the camps.

Go, protestors, go! May you show the world the truth!

Keep the protests peaceful. Yes, the 260.000 IDPs have to be freed. And the pressure has to be applied on all governments. This can be done only by Sri Lankans living abraod. No protests are possible in SL.
SO DO KEEP IT UP !

It is the improved version of Nazi Germany one is beginning to see in Sri Lanka. The Cult of the Personality (ala the Fuhrer) is already on. Giant cut-outs of the President litters all corners of the capital and the country side. There are inspired moves to "Hail our brave King" and to annoint him as undisputed leader for 3 terms and/or for 25 years and/or "for life" depending on the level of your sycophancy (Sinhala term - "pandama") The local Gestapo is already being strengthened. Mangala Samaraweera publicly charged a Gestapo-type of Govt-lackey IT professionals are working in a building opposite Queen Street/Janadipathi Mawatha opposite the Presidents residence hacking e-mails in/out of those whom they suspect to be anti-Govt. This is done with collaboration of Govt-allied men in the SLT. This group is lead by Jayantha Wickramasinghe, younger brother of the Bank of Ceylon Chairman Gamini Wickramasinghe - both earlier successful IT professionals. They also have a list of e-mail addresses of Lankans within and outside Sri Lanka whose mails/telephones are being illegally invaded and broken into. These are the usual characteristics of societies swiftly transforming into either fascistic, theocratic and anti-democratic in the extreme. As to Sri Lanka it is a combination of all three.

Senguttavan & Co. Make me laugh.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reductio_ad_hitlerum

That's right,...keep Up this REDUCTIO AD HITLERUM Rhethoric and then wonder why you get no sympathy from Sinhalese people.

People Like Senguttavan should realize that when they Throw around such VILE RHETORIC in an attempt to Vilify the Sinhalese by any means necessary you are only bringing about more Negative Consequences to your own Race. Watch what you say old man, even speech has consequences.

Devinda,

I fear in your confused equilibrium of bigotry and racial prejudice you have lost your mental direction. In my immediate circles today there are more wonderful Sinhalese friends than others and this has been so in my father’s time too. Though my son lives in the West, it is so in his social gatherings too that I notice whenever I visit him. Close friends of my only daughter living in the East are Sinhalese as well. I am naturally pleased with this. So just throw the charge “this vilify the Sinhalese by any means” out of the window. But critical I have been and am on the un-buddhistic, politicised JHU, the opportunistic windbag and pernicious WW, the rowdy and vulgar Mervyn de Silva and the misdirected Buddhist-Sinhala supremacist cabal. I am in the company – for the present – of men like Mangala Samaraweera, Ranil Wickremasinghe, Karu Jayasuriya, Vickramabahu Karunaratna, Vasu Nanayakkara and fearless journalists like Tissaranee Gunasekera, Shanie, Kishali-Pinto Jayawardena (Lawyer) just to name only a few - all of whom see the current Buddhist-Sinhala regime of the Rajapakse Bros as being inimical to the nation’s good. Are you suggesting all of these Lankans – to use your own words - spew “vile rhetoric to vilify the Sinhalese”? Buddhism, that great religion that emerged from the sacred soil of India and has followers in many countries of the world - including here, has much meaning to me. It is because it provides solace and inner peace, I am a regular visitor on Saturdays with a group of senior, committed Sinhala Buddhists meeting in a Bambalapitiya temple. These are pious, educated men and women who have gained much depth in the tolerant and compassionate teachings of the Enlightened One. But, for God’s sake, don’t confuse Buddhism with a Sinhala exclusive, which the politicized mullahs and their bigoted followers take it to be their private monopolistic property. Not just here, but one notices for sometime now in Thailand and Myanmar too. Buddhist priests there too have politicized the religion also to their parochial agendas. From your regular comments I note you are well endowed and I believe your talents can go to bring our two people together rather than keep them apart. It is good if you can use your good influences to get the more high profile Buddhist heads from the hierarchy to visit the IDPs and the Jaffna District to assure the Tamils there (I believe they will not disagree with President Rajapakse’s description “Tamils are also our people”) that the time has come to forget and go forward. Remember Bishop Desmond Tutu? This can make a qualitative difference in the eyes of the Tamils in the North East who have lost faith in Sinhala politicians in general. VP is surely history but the flames of increasing Tamil discontent is simmering within. Unless this is put off for all time, conditions will be created for many ubiquitous reincarnations of the dreaded/hated “monster” or martyred “hero” – depending on which side of the spectrum you chose to be.
