current tv: Sri Lanka - Notes from a War on Terror

Vanguard correspondent Mariana van Zeller travels to Sri Lanka during the final days of the country's civil war to see how one of the world's most powerful insurgencies, the Tamil Tigers, was finally defeated. While some security experts are hailing Sri Lanka as a case study in how to defeat an insurgency, Mariana finds that it comes at a steep price:

Arguablly, there was "terrorism" on both sides of the divide which this narrative seeks to portray to a wider global audience.

But the more important issue of what caused Tamil resistance and why some of them took to arms was not brought out for the benefit of the viewer - except in passing reference. If the viewer comes to the conclusion all Tamils are supporters of the Tigers they cannot be blamed. But the reality is that this is far from the truth.

Youbg Minister Navin Dissanayake says "after the war we will bring the Tamils a solution" The Tamils await this and realise this promise has been made many times before - never to be implemented.

They hope this time it will be different. Incidentally, where is that man of good intent Prof Tissa Vitarana on whose efforts many Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims laid much faith the peace they pray for will be with them soon.

His APRC - renamed later - is now a virtual joke. No fault of his, admittedly. That is Sri Lanka's tragedy - promises for peace and unity are made - but dumped later to accomodate political expediency and to increase the prospects for victory at the next elections.

Yes It is true that all Tamils are not supporters of Tigers and also true not all Sinhaleese are haters of Tigers, but majority of the Tamils have supported and supporting the Tiger's end Goal Eelam (Self determination, homelands, etc) and majority of Sinhala have and are opposed to Eelam. And Also majority of Sinhala Buddhist doesn’t regard Tamils, Muslems, Malays even Christian Sinhala as equals with them. That is the reality. Our post independent history has taught us. So it is not possible to achieve what the majority of Tamils desire by mutual consent from Sinhala. The only way to achieve Tamil's desire is by Force ( may not be violent and Democratic force as both of these have failed) We need to invent another way that is what is now evolving among the Tamil Diaspora. After all the Tamil's are not strangers for inventions.

P.s a short reminder of histry

Every agreement entered into claiming to solve the Tamil issue, including Banda-Chelva pact, Dudley-Chelva pact, Indo-Sri Lanka agreement , Chandrika’s proposals, and Tigers ISGA and peace process had been rejected, and cast off by the majority Sinhalese led regimes in the past.
President Rajapaksa's genocidal onslaught on Tamil Eelam will strengthen the determination of more than 80 million Tamils living in many lands and bring closer the emergence of an independent Tamil state.
please remember Tamil people will forget what you said, Tamil people will forget what you did, but Tamil people will never forget how you made them feel..." Afte all
