Mahinda gave Rs. 180 million to the LTTE through Basil, charges Tiran Alles

National organizer of the SLFP Mahajana Wing Tiran Alles says Basil Rajapaksa personally handed over, at his office, Rs. 180 million to the then LTTE financial controller Emil Kanthan to ensure that the people of the north refrained from voting at the 2005 presidential election.

Mr. Alles added that the deal took place at the request of the then presidential candidate Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Speaking to the media at his Koswatte home yesterday (24th) that was attacked by UPFA goons two days ago, Mr. Alles said he first came to know Emil Kanthan, then an employee of the Ministry of Rehabilitation, in 2002 when Parliamentarian Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena introduced him.

Following a request by the then Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa to introduce him to a person capable of doing a deal with the LTTE, Mr. Allas said he had introduced Emil Kanthan to Basil Rajapaksa.

After Emil Kanthan was told that Basil Rajapaksa wanted to meet him on behalf of Mahinda Rajapaksa, a meeting was held at Mr. Alles’ office. After several such discussions between the two, one day Basil Rajapaksa wanted to know from Emil Kanthan what sort of support the LTTE wanted from the premier to strengthen their link.

After consulting the LTTE leadership, Emil Kanthan had come back and said the outfit wanted Rs. 180 million to buy boats. Mr. Basil Rajapaksa said they only wanted the LTTE to get the people of the north to boycott the presidential polls.

The money sought by Emil Kanthan was handed over a few days later in dollars, given by a neighbouring country for the presidential campaign, and rupee notes said Mr. Alles.

He said he had revealed all these in his statement to the TID in 2007 subsequent to his arrest by them, and as a result the attorney general had withdrawn all charges against him. Speaking further, Mr. Alles said he had informed president Rajapaksa on February 14, 2007 about all these through a sworn affidavit signed by Ven. Uduwe Dhammaloka Thera who supports the president.

Mr. Alles said he was now compelled to expose Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa's deal with the LTTE as the president and Mr. Basil Rajapaksa were attempting to kill him, the first such attempt being the grenade attack on his home.

SLFP (M) leader Mangala Samaraweera too was present at the media briefing. COURTESY:LANKATRUTH

Dear Tiran,

Thank you for your revelation.

It contains many assumptions.

1. that Emil Kanthan was a genuine representative of the LTTE who had adequate clout in influencing decisions of the LTTE leadeship

2. that the SL Rs 180m included US$'s that were given by a 'neighbouring country'.

If you have evidence that HE the President of Sri Lanka and his Senior Adviser are attempting to end your life, please rush to the Inspector General of Police and present such evidence for his consideration.

If you do not have confidence in the IGP's ability to pursue your evidence and protect your life, one way out could be to seek refuge within the premises of a foreign mission in Colombo for your own safety.

Didn't DBSJ saythis a long time ago??

I am not saying that what was done was right.

However, why are we hearing about this now. If it happened in 2005. Mr. Alles should have mentioned it then and not now when he has had a falling out with the Rajapakses.

Also, even if they did give money to the LTTE, one can't forget the fact that it is because they did so that they won the election and so were able to destroy the LTTE. which is more that Ranil and company have done.

This raises the following in my mind.
1)So LTTE was a corrupt organization - enforced the boycott for money and this was not a strategic decision to elect a leader, in their opinion, who would destabilise Sri Lanka?
2)Managla and Tiran did not know anything what was going on?
3)Will this help to understand why TNA supporting SF now?

The LTTE supported MR at the last Presidential election by preventing the Tamils from voting. Prabhakran welcomed his election as a pragmatic leader. Later during the closing stages of the war Prabkharan delayed his surrender till the last moment pinning hopes on these contacts with the President. Hence now the reason for the actions of the LTTE have been revealed.

Tyran it is bit too late for this lie. At least if you reveal this lie few weeks ago,you could put the blame on MR about the grenade attack of your home.

Romesh, yes DBSJ said this way back.

Tiran and Mangala were in it as they sabotaged the democratic process in the country by getting the LTTE to enforce a boycott.

Why are you complaining now Tiran ?

Our judiciary must hold you and Mangala accountable as much you point the finger at the Rajapaksa clan.

Tiran's exposure is norhing new. This was already exposed by Sriparthy and see what happened to him! In my opinion, the worst enemy ever existed against Tamils in history was the LTTE. The good seconds are the other liberation organizations created by great India. Tamils are like Jews or even worse. At least the Jews have cohesive existence wherever they scatteredly lived. The Tamil never had consensus among themselves on any matter, let alone oplitics. Look at their history. The Cera, Chola and Pandian clans were always agaist each other. One was so vicious and went to the extend of overpowering Ceran Senkttuwan and load a rock on his head to bring all the way to to make a Kannaki statue.
