Unfortunately I can only parallel your status in general with the status of whole tamil community in that island, since we tamils also for the last 62 years searching answers to the same questions you have started asking now:

During the war your father did not give any damn consideration for the civilian deaths. He ordered his troops to bomb hospitals, densely populated civilian/IDP areas, schools and places of worship. Did you ever bother to find out the quantity of explosives used in the Vanni war? I have nothing against taking military action against the LTTE but the civilians and surrendered cadres should have been protected. Furthermore, he should have promptly conducted investigation into the execution of 5 students in Trinco and 17 charity workers in Mothoor.

There is a group of people who write against the General Fonseka. First of all those people are heartless and ruthless. Most of the haters wrote under the following topics. a. Leadership of the war. b. War crimes. c. Politics. d. Money. Therefore it is appropriate to address those topics. a. Leadership of the war: General Fonseka was the commander of the army during the war against the terrorist. It was the battle, which mainly fought through the ground not by the sea or air. The battle was fought according to the indigenous strategy laid by the 40 years war veteran namely General Fonseka. It was not the strategy laid by the percy mahendra rajapaksha or gotabaya rajapaksha or air chief or navy chief. For your information, percy rajapaksha is a mere politician, and no idea about the military manoeuvres against the world ruthless terrorists. Gotabaya rajapaksha was a serviceman, however he migrated to the USA and pursued another career, computers. He had no clue about the situation of sri lanka since he abandoned sri lanka for more than a decade. Air Force and Navy chiefs do not have any knowledge about the ground manoeuvres. The total credit should go to the Army since they conducted the battle for many months sustaining the injuries and deaths. However, other forces including navy, air force civil defence, police supported the battle. You have to realize that the solder on the ground fired upon by the terrorist, then navy, air force or any body can not support that solder. Only another solder or a team of army has to support him. That was the "direct" contribution of the war. Having said that, there were instances air force, navy and police supported army "indirectly" such as casualty evacuation, transportation, support fire etc. Civilians such as cooks, barbers, politicians including percy mahendra rajapaksha and gotabaya rajapaksha etc. supported the war in order to win "indirectly" according to their respective fields. There is a saying "Too many cooks spoil the soup". If every cook is trying to add pinch of salt to soup then you cannot consume the soup. This is true. General Fonseka lead the war brilliantly and save Sri Lanka from ruthless terrorism. He gave the freedom for 20 million people. Do not ever forget the massacres, killings and bombings carried out by the terrorists. We all should appreciate and thanks to General Fonseka for saving the country from terrorism. However, today the person who liberated the country is in the gulag even without fresh air to breath. How pathetic? It is very sad. He is the bravest General of all time having injured few times including suicide bomb. b. War crimes: You have to understand that this topic came after wining the war during the presidential election. This is the democratic world. There are murders, rapists and robbers. There is a law and order to protect the system. General Fonseka managed the people who possessed the guns all time. There must be a strict discipline in the army and the people who disobeyed needs to be dealt. Think about the serving officers of army, navy and air force who attended for presidential election campaign. What happened to the services? Where is the discipline? Justice should be equal to everyone. However, if there is a war crime, then the commander of the army also needs to be attended for investigation for certain extend since he commanded the army and it is a normal procedure. People should never forget that. The "traitor" label is election propaganda against the General Fonseka that created by the ruling government. He is not a traitor; he is a "protector". Do you know an old frail Tamil Gentleman called SJV Chelvanayagam if not have you read about him He was representing Tamils for long time and in the 50s,60s and most part of 70s he together his party members has tried all avalable non violent, diplpmatic and democratic, means tried to make Sinhala and Tamils live to-gether in on Srilanka/Ceylon as equal , citizen with equal rights on their own homes speaking ,their own language and minding their own busines with dignity and self respect in a federal setup.

Gordon Weiss, a former UN spokesperson for Sri Lanka who had detailed knowledge of the ground battles and who resigned from the UN after 14 years and returned home to Australia, in an interview to the ABC News said, Sri Lanka’s military massacred as many as 40,000 Tamil civilians in the final onslaught against the Liberation Tigers in 2009.

Ban told Sri Lanka's President Mahinda Rajapakse that he intended to "go ahead with the establishment of a panel of experts," according to Nesirky.

I am writing this as an old Anandian with origins from Ambalangoda, from the same road that your father lived during his young days. I was justly proud that he commanded the Army to wipe out the LTTE and when he stepped forward as the Presidential Candidate and as a "Mr. Clean", I was really hoping that there would be a "believable change".

Now that lots of water has flown under the bridge, I feel let down by the General, whom I admired so much, because he seems not to be "Mr. Clean" after all. The greatest crime he has committed is calling others corrupt when he may have been more corrupt.

I think the "White Flag" story is nothing but revenge against his former "brother in arms" who may have passed the buck on to him when he was accosted at JFK, but Danuna has really messed up your whole family with HiCorp. Your father has to be blamed squarely for giving Danuna more preference as opposed to Maj. General Pannipitiya and Brig. Prasanna Silva.

Today there are hundreds and thousands of Tamils can testify to this kind of treatment that has been going on for last three to four decades. But there is no one to cry, support or fight for us. Last 30 years when we fought back for our rights, freedom and liberty we have been classified and catergorised as terrorist (even though we are not and I know it is a debate no one will win). At least you know where is your Father, since 1992 we've been searching for our much loved Grandfather who vanished without a trace on his way to Eastern province from Colombo. I believe most people in Sri Lanka admire and respect Gen. Fonseka as a Great National Hero. History will be very kind to him.
However he is no Mahinda Rajapakse when it comes to political strategy and international presence which was also of paramount importance in winning the ruthless war.
I agree he should have been treated with dignity - but his political interests (he is not cut out for it) and vengeful statements on 'war crimes' etc did not help.
As an outsider, I wondered why two very accomplished adults showed sentimental immaturity to fight it out for glory they already earned is beyond me. Leaders of that calibre must have shown humility and not attempting to humiliate each other.
However, Aparna can take some delight knowing that political history has shown that there is no permanency in power and glory.
